Mercedes 190E Cosworth 2.3 16V

Some cars we’re always happy to see coming back. This Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth is becoming something of a regular—we’ve sold it three times previously. At this stage, it probably knows where we keep the kettle.

Finished in the wonderfully period Smoke Silver metallic with a houndstooth interior, this is a particularly handsome example of one of Mercedes’ finest sporting saloons. The colour has that lovely champagne tint which suits the sharp lines, subtle bodykit and unmistakable stance perfectly. Smart enough for a board meeting, with just enough attitude to suggest you might take the long way home.

We know this particular car very well, having also maintained it for two previous customers over a number of years. Restored in the mid-2000s and subsequently held in a private collection, it remains in excellent condition, with really sharp bodywork and a huge service history accompanying it. Since its restoration, it has been used, enjoyed and maintained as intended, and its condition today is a credit to that care.

Then there’s the important bit: the 2.3-litre, Cosworth-developed 16-valve engine and five-speed dogleg manual gearbox. A proper driver’s combination, and a large part of what makes these cars so special.

The 2.5 might win the numbers argument, but there’s a very good case for choosing the original 2.3. Its shorter-stroke engine gives it an appealing mechanical character, and for the enthusiast who enjoys working through the gears, the attraction goes well beyond outright power. It’s the original recipe: compact proportions, a wonderfully purposeful engine and a gearbox that expects you to pay attention. For us, that’s a compelling combination.

Inside, the houndstooth trim delivers exactly the right amount of 1980s sporting Mercedes charm. Sun roof, electric drivers seat, electric windows and that’s it. No driving aids, no manufactured exhaust soundtrack—just a proper cabin and somewhere you’ll want to spend time.

An excellent example of a hugely significant sporting Mercedes, with extensive history and the added reassurance of being a car we’ve known and looked after ourselves.

Three previous sales, and we’re still delighted to have it back. That should tell you something.
