A BMW 316 with twin Webers, a Nardi wheel and a chassis that means business. Someone clearly had the right idea.
Finished in Zinnoberrot Red over Perlbeige cloth, this 1987 E30 takes the familiar charm of an early chrome-bumper BMW and adds a little extra mischief. It’s a non-sunroof two-door with just over 13,000 miles covered, still wearing its original paintwork and presenting beautifully throughout.
A previous owner had a clear idea in mind: create his ideal fast-road 316. Keep the light four-cylinder engine, preserve the car’s character and give the suspension, brakes and engine the attention needed to make it a properly entertaining little BMW.
The chassis received Wilwood 280mm four-pot front brakes, a rear disc conversion with replacement trailing arms, renewed wheel bearings and handbrake cables, and BC Racing coilovers. A set of 7.5 x 15-inch Ronal LS wheels gives it just the right stance without looking out of place.
Under the bonnet, the M10 four-cylinder benefits from twin 40 Weber carburettors, a fast-road cam, custom exhaust manifold and Sebring exhaust. A simple, purposeful recipe with plenty of character and an induction soundtrack that makes the radio somewhat optional.
With a manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and relatively little weight to move around, the appeal is in how it all works together. Willing, involving and full of personality, with the chassis upgrades to make the most of a favourite stretch of road.
The preservation is every bit as appealing as the specification. Garaged throughout its life, it retains its original Zinnoberrot paintwork, complemented by bright chrome bumpers, the period BMW “Jimmy Hill” front valance and those lovely Ronal wheels. Subtle changes that suit the car remarkably well.
Inside, the Perlbeige cloth cabin is a particular highlight. The seats, carpets, door cards and dashboard are beautifully kept, while a wooden Nardi steering wheel and matching gear knob add the finishing touches. It’s wonderfully simple, with excellent visibility and everything exactly where you’d expect it.
Accompanied by its book pack, spare key and an impressive history file, this is a thoughtfully developed 316 that combines exceptionally low mileage and original paint with a very good excuse to get out and drive.
Nearly forty years old, beautifully kept and still with plenty of adventures ahead. Preferably the scenic route.
