There are Pajeros… and then there are original Pajeros like this.
This is a 1987 first-series Mitsubishi Pajero short wheelbase, finished in dark navy blue with silver lower decals and side pinstriping. It’s quite simply one of the tidiest examples we’ve ever had — and that’s saying something.
Powered by the 2.5 turbo diesel and paired with the much-desired 5-speed manual gearbox (so many of these are automatic), it has covered an exceptionally low 73,000 km from new. It starts instantly, pulls cleanly right through the rev range, and drives exactly as you’d hope a low-mileage Pajero should — tight, eager, and confidence-inspiring on the road.
The standout feature here is just how original this car is. The interior is absolutely immaculate. Completely factory original, right down to the rare Mitsubishi Dolby surround head unit, which you almost never see still in place. Seats, trim, dash — all superb.
All paintwork is 100% original. The chrome is fantastic throughout and really sets the car off. As is common with Japanese-market cars, the bonnet and roof show lacquer peel and sun fade from the climate over there. We will be repainting these panels as part of the deal, but we’re deliberately happy to show the car beforehand so you can see just how genuine and untouched it really is.
The engine bay is tidy and unmolested. The underside is totally original. It hasn’t been Shultz , coated, or messed with — just an honest, clean example.
The first-series Pajero is the one that started it all — Mitsubishi’s answer to the serious off-roaders of the 1980s, built tough and engineered properly. These early short wheelbase models are becoming increasingly hard to find in this condition, especially with low mileage, a manual gearbox, and this level of originality.
On the road, it’s really, really good. Everything feels right. It’s solid, smooth, and clearly cherished. This is not over-restored, not tarted up, and not pretending to be something it isn’t. It’s just a proper, proper piece of kit.
If you’re looking for a classic Pajero that’s honest, original, and increasingly collectible — this is the one.
