Porsche 964 3.8 ‘Lightweight’

As the last of the ‘old school’ 911s, the 964 has never wanted for attention. But, with the recent trend for custom 911s, the 964 has taken on a new level of popularity.

Having undergone major mechanical, interior and exterior work this sensational 1990 964 has been given the full ‘RS lightweight’ treatment with no stone left unturned in the quest to make it the incredible car it is today.

At a casual glance it may seem like a standard, albeit beautifully presented, Guards Red 964 with the exception of a carbon bonnet, but this is just a hint at what else is going on under the surface.

Following a full strip and repaint, a carbon fibre bootlid (with original electric spoiler retained) has also been fitted, the sunroof and rear wiper have been deleted, the rear windscreen has been replaced with a thin RS version and any unnecessary weight from the interior has been removed such as a carpets, soundproofing and the AC unit.

The standard interior has been replaced with retrimmed Recaro Pole Position seats with black nappa leather and red stitching (as per the RS) and a 6-point Schroth harness for the driver has been fitted along with a Heigo aluminium half roll cage. The roof liner has been retrimmed in black Alcantara, too, and a Bluetooth radio with upgraded speakers have been installed.

New door and window seals along with a new genuine front windscreen were fitted during the rebuild, also.

To match the lightweight body, the car has been fitted with the performance to match in terms of engine, suspension and brakes.

A race spec engine built by CTR Developments has been fitted using Mahle 3.8 barrels and pistons, 997 gt3 oil pump, Schreck race cams and lightened and strengthened internals running through a 993 6-speed gearbox with Quaife LSD, Golden Rod quick shift and single mass flywheel with RS clutch.

A hand-built (and incredible sounding) exhaust with equal length headers by Hayward & Scott Essex UK has been fitted while a MoTec ECU, larger injectors were fitted along with ancillary works including routine maintenance Neinmeister Warrington UK earlier this year.

In the braking and suspension departments there 993 brakes with Pagid Blue pads, braided brake lines, fully adjustable Bilstein PSS10s, Rennline monoballs and adjustable anti roll bars. Refurbished genuine Cup wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres provide phenomenal grip, too.

In short, this is a beautifully built 964 fitted with the very best parts that must be one of the most exhilarating cars we’ve ever driven and represents superb value for money given that a genuine RS fetches in excess of €300k.

If you’re in the market for a fast road 911 you’d do well to find a better example.
