A really usable example of one of the more interesting cars from the 944 range, this 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet recently came to us as a trade-in and offers an opportunity to get into an S2 Cabriolet at a very sensible price.
Powered by Porsche’s 3.0-litre 16-valve four-cylinder engine and paired with the 5-speed manual gearbox, the S2 was a significant step on from the earlier naturally aspirated 944s. With around 210bhp and, more importantly, plenty of torque, they are a genuinely quick and very satisfying car to drive.
This one is particularly good on the road – it pulls extremely well, the gearbox feels right and the whole car feels tight, planted and mechanically together. Having covered approximately 115,000 miles, it comes with a good service history and will be supplied by us freshly serviced and with a new NCT.
It presents really well in metallic blue with a contrasting light leather interior, dark blue hood and original Porsche alloy wheels. The bodywork is very presentable and, importantly with these cars, it is structurally very good. Being completely transparent, there are a number of cosmetic areas that could be improved if somebody wanted to take the car to the next level. The electric hood operates correctly and is watertight, although there are a few small tears to the outer skin.
The dashboard has had some previous repairs which remain visible, the seats have been recoloured at some point and there are a handful of smaller interior trim items that could benefit from attention. All of this can be seen clearly in the photographs. It isn’t quite at the level of cosmetic preparation we would normally put into one of our retail cars, and we’ve priced it accordingly rather than carrying out a long list of relatively minor cosmetic improvements.
What you are getting underneath it all is a very good-driving, presentable and fundamentally sound S2 Cabriolet. With some gradual cosmetic TLC, we think it has the makings of a €22,000–€24,000 example, but equally it can simply be serviced, NCT’d and enjoyed exactly as it is. €16,000 firm.
A lot of Porsche for the money and, most importantly, a 944 S2 that drives every bit as well as it should.
