We’re not saying you should abandon civilisation, but this Nissan does make a reasonably convincing case. It even comes with somewhere to sleep and somewhere to keep your sandwiches.
This wonderfully characterful 1994 Safari Granroad is the Japanese-market version of the Nissan Patrol Y60. A grade 4 Japanese import with low mileage, it combines a big 4.2-litre petrol engine, automatic transmission and proper four-wheel drive with an unexpectedly civilised camping setup.
And just look at it. The pearl-and-green two-tone finish, substantial wide arches, raised suspension and chunky tyres give it fantastic presence. Add the high roof, chrome bumpers, side steps and front-mounted winch, and it looks ready for an expedition before you’ve even left the driveway.
The condition is what really sets this one apart. The body presents beautifully, while the chassis and underbody are exceptionally well preserved — almost like new. It’s a remarkably fresh example of a vehicle now more than three decades old.
Inside, the lovely grey cloth seats and matching door trims have survived incredibly well. The cabin has that reassuringly solid, straightforward feel that makes older Japanese vehicles so appealing, and the air conditioning blows properly cold. Possibly colder than you’ll ever need in Ireland, but it’s nice to have ambition.
On the road, it’s a pleasure. The big petrol engine is super smooth, with plenty of power and torque, while the automatic gearbox makes everything feel relaxed and effortless. It drives far more comfortably than its rather purposeful appearance might suggest. The engine’s reputation for toughness only adds to the attraction.
Open the rear doors and there’s another reason to like it. A neatly fitted bed setup, built-in rear cool box and concealed sink with washing facilities make weekends away a very tempting prospect. There’s even storage beneath the rear platform. Pack a sleeping bag, a few supplies and a suitably vague explanation of when you’ll be home.
It’s an unusual combination: a handsome Japanese classic, a proper 4×4 and a rather charming little escape vehicle. Equally enjoyable heading along the west coast or simply taking the long way back from the shops.
An exceptionally well-presented Safari with bags of character, supplied registered in Ireland.
Adventure optional. Taking a second look on your way out of the driveway is almost guaranteed
