Some cars define the word ‘classic’ better than others, and the Mercedes W108 is certainly one of them.
This late-production 1972 280 SE 3.5 is the epitome of style and its stunning bodylines, perfect proportions and abundance of chrome have stood the test of time impeccably.
Although its life started in the UK, it enjoyed the drier climate of Cyprus from the early ‘80s until it was imported to Ireland in recent years.
Although having zero rust or corrosion, the car has undergone a fully documented recent body refresh to an incredibly high standard by a specialist in the west of Ireland, with no stone unturned from the original Mexican Hat wheels to stunning chrome trim.
The original beige leather seats, wood trims and carpets are all excellent, too.
The car received a huge amount of mechanical work, also, to bring it up to standard including a full rebuild of the 4-speed automatic gearbox by Autotranz and new blower fitted at a cost of €2k.
In total, almost €25k has been spent perfecting the car in the last 12 months.
This W108 drives every bit as good as it looks, too, with that 3.5 V8 performing flawlessly with plenty of power and the rebuilt gearbox and suspension making the journey gloriously smooth.
A simply stunning example of an attractive and practical classic Mercedes in which to cruise in comfort and style.
