The Ford badge has adorned many iconic cars in its time, and none more so than the Mk1 Escort that took the rally and racing world by storm.

This genuine 1971 Mexico in glorious Maize Yellow ticks a lot of boxes and has received some key upgrades over the years.

With the exception of a lovely set of 13” Revolution alloys and must-have Cibie spot lamps, this Mexico appears largely standard and retains its original RS steering wheel, seats and gauges.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll find that the underpinnings of the car are not so standard, however, such as the 4-pot Willwood brake callipers and, more significantly, the 2.0 pinto engine on Weber carbs with a 5-speed Type 9 gearbox bolted to the back of it!

The result is a car that nicely blends original aesthetics with upgraded performance, and has just had all new ignition components fitted, too.

This is an honest and usable example of a rally icon that could be further enhanced, if desired, and represents a more affordable way into Escort Mexico ownership.
