Fiat 238 Ambulance

It’s rare that anybody would describe an Ambulance as being “pretty”, but this 1974 Fiat 238 is the execption to the rule.

Purchased new by the Italian Ambulance Service in 1974 and put into use in the quiet Italian village of Macerata, it saw very little use over its front-line service. Gradually superseded by newer models, it must have wormed its way into their affections as it remained tucked away in a quiet corner of the station for years. By the time it emerged from hibernation in 2015, less than 7,000km had passed beneath its wheels over four decades.

This rare survivor was imported into the UK in 2016 before embarking on a thorough recommissioning. While the gentle Italian climate – and long term covered storage – left the bodywork in remarkably good condition, with the paintwork being largely original, the mechanical components needed bringing back to life. Renowned restorers Sussex Sports Cars went about the work, refurbishing and replacing parts as necessary at a total cost of £20k.

The van has been completely rebuilt mechanically, too. It has been adapted for unleaded fuel and has all the basics for self-sufficiency on the road, but has been kept as original as possible. The blue flashing lights are for show puroses only with replacement clear lenses being required for use on the road.

Elsewhere, the orignal Dymo labelling in the cab has been translated into English, the cupboards now have battery interior lights, the floor is hardwearing wood, and all the seats have been re-covered in soft Italian leather to keep it authentic. Some modern creature comforts such as cigar lighter sockets, a USB port and a period working radio have been added. It has also wired for a leisure battery. A specially made protection cover comes with it as well.

The 1,438cc engine, which generally produced c.45bhp but the ambulance variants were fitted with a higher output 51bhp engine, allowing faster response times.

This delightful van is supplied with numerous amounts of paperwork documenting its restoration, as well as the original owners handbook and some paperwork from its time in Italy.

A truly delightful piece of automotice history that is thoroughly enjoyable to drive and could be used for a variety of purposes including as a camper or catering enterprise.

Viewing strictly by appointment. All cars supplied with valid NCT where appropriate.
